Sagine

did a photoshoot over the weekend at South Street Seaport

if anybody would like a photoshoot for portraits, couples, engagement sessions, etc... i am doing FREE photoshoots.  why free?  because i'm practicing and i don't want to guarantee fantastic photos... i'm just looking to build my portfolio for a possible side-job in photography in case if dentistry bores me later.

thank you Sagine!

as for constructive criticism?
i just realized how important hands are.  i gotta stop chopping them out of the frame.

 East Village Eats

if someone asked me what my favorite neighborhood in NYC is, i'd have to say East Village.  i often find myself around this area whenever i'm downtown on the weekends.

Ippudo

raved that it is the most authentic japanese food, Ippudo is said to have the best ramen ever.  unfortunately for me, Ippudo cannot accomodate to make a vegetarian version of ramen and so i did not have the privilege of tasting such wonderful ramen.

Jessica's miso ramen with tonkatsu based broth.

their food is a bit on the pricey side, but i'm told that it's worth every penny.  what actually makes it more worth it is that you can pay an extra 2 dollars for the larger serving, which is pretty much twice the smaller size.

my agedashi tofu for $8

though it was really yummy, i just don't think it's worth paying $8 for 4 pieces of tofu sitting in broth.  i left feeling not very full... perhaps if i was willing to fork out $30 or so, my stomach could've been a little happier.

but East Village offers so many good foods at cheap prices, why would i want to pay more at Ippudo?

Dumpling Man

dumpling man on St. Marks Street between 1st Ave and Ave A.

you sit at a bar and you can watch the Chinese women construct all the assortments of dumplings behind the glass window.

i ordered the surprise veggie dumplings.  and by surprise, they probably just mean "special" of the month.  this had leeks, shiitake mushrooms, and hoisin sauce.

the dumplings were... okay.  they weren't like wonderfully to die for.  but.. i'm not ready to give up on them just yet.  they had so many other vegetarian options that i want to try out so i'd like to come back and see.  i really wanted to try their Cassava Crepe but didn't because they listed eggs as an ingredient.  but after ordering, i saw on their menu inside that they offered a vegan variety of the crepe!  bah!

although i just realized that they offer special sauces, such as concoctions named Hot Monster, Cool Monster, Asian Tahini, and Green Curry.

i will return to try them again!

Chikalicious

chikalicious has 2 shops: a dessert/restaurant type of shop that is more expensive and a bit more pompous, i think; and the other side which i call "express".  i've been to the dessert bar and although the dessert was good, it was expensive and basically something to "ooh" and "aah" your eyes while you watch Chik or some other dessert chef put your dessert together on a plate.

i went to the express side for the first time yesterday and it was absolutely wonderful!  the employees behind the counter are so friendly and joked with me as i pulled out my enormous SLR camera to take photos of their shop (normally, i get ridiculed or condemned for taking indoor restaurant photos).

warm apple crisp with ice cream and vanilla custard pudding

their dessert was super yummy.  not bad on the prices -- a bit expensive, but reasonable when you compare them to the dessert bar.

the warm apple crisp was not really anything extraordinary, but in general was a good dessert.  the vanilla custard pudding surprised me, as their pudding wasn't really a pudding but more like a warm vanilla-laiden sauce soaking a cake.  i couldn't put my finger on what flavor the cake was... tasted almost carroty, but it wasn't.  and the sauce had such a strong vanilla taste, but not so sweet that it was a delightful culinary experience.

Saint's Alp Teahouse

and as usual, when i'm in East Village with Jessica, we go to Saint's Alp Teahouse for boba.

i could've sworn their name was Saint Alp's cuz that makes more sense to me and that's what i've been calling it all this time.  but according to the mug, i guess it is Saint's Alp Teahouse.

Max Brenner
chocolate by the bald man

i didn't go out for valentines' day.  but i did go out the day after with some old and new friends.  :)

we went to Max Brenner -- the wonderful restaurant of chocolatey goodness.

*disclaimer: i am not a vegan, nor do i plan to be in the future.  i commend those who are taking the extra step to being environmentally friendly by going vegan.  for me however... i feel like being vegetarian is already a large effort on my behalf.  i play the occasional ignorance card with desserts.  but please know that my beliefs in being animal friendly is still strong so don't be so quick to be judgemental should you see me eating desserts that aren't 100% vegan or lacto-vegetarian friendly.

okaaaay!

mine and jessica's foods.  i got the spinach/asparagus savory crepe and jess got the chicken panini with waffle fries sprinkled with cocoa and chile powders.

the savory crepe was alright.  i had this the first time i went to max brenner.  they don't have too many vegetarian options, but i love anything with spinach or anything with cheese in it.  offer me both and i'll be happy.  but for crepes, i think i'm more partial to cheese that is perhaps fancier... like brie.  this was a bit ghetto when i noticed they had just literally slapped on a slice of melted Swiss cheese on top of the crepe.  the crepe did have a bit of chile powder inside so it had a bit of a kick to it... but not unbearably spicy or anything.

jessica's panini was good, according to her.  i picked at her waffle fries and they were just like any other waffle fries.  i didn't really taste any of the cocoa or chile powder on it.

mmMmm... the Mon Cherry.  it tasted just like hot chocolate... but with a kick!

yay dessert time!

we got some chocolate trio pleasure fondu with white chocolate, toffee caramel, and milk chocolate to dip.  on side were marshmallows, banana nut bread, strawberries, and bananas.  actually the best part of the fondu was the toffee caramel.  the melted chocolate were pretty ordinary to me.

and the cake we got was the Ivory Heart.  a brown chocolate cake with melted white chocolate center, served with a flask of milk chocolate, ice cream, strawberries, and blueberries on the side.

i have a sweet tooth... anything with chocolate and i'm a fan.

and speaking of chocolate, my valentine (whom i did not see because he was 3000 miles away in california) sent me a box of chocolates.  my favorite... fruit filled soft centers!

mmm... nom nom nom.

chinatown

jessica and i usually spend part of our weekend eating somewhere in the city together.  today we trekked to chinatown so i could take her to Joe's Ginger (sister restaurant of Joe's Shanghai).  Joe's is well known for their soup dumplings.

although sadly for me, the soup dumplings at joe's only come in pork or crab variety.  so i've never had the soup dumplings myself.  but i always tell my visitors and guests to go to joe's for the soup dumplings.

i love scallion pancakes.  so oily, but oh so good.

more chinese greasy goodness.  we got vegetarian entrees since i couldn't eat the dumplings.

i usually think that joe's is only good for their dumplings.  many times i've gone and i feel like their entrees are just okay... or my friends have told me that their meat is usually not cooked thoroughly.

but in any case, joe's shanghai is always super crowded because of the novelty of their soup dumplings.  if you've never had soup dumplings, you must know that there is an art to eating them as well:

so after Joe's, we walk down one block to the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

mmMmm... 3 scoops of red bean, lychee, and taro ice cream.

my favorite is always the lychee.  if i ever just get one scoop, it's usually lychee.

the ice cream is kinda pricy but sooo yummy.  the best bang for your buck is to get 3 scoops and share.

1 scoop = $3
2 scoops = $ 5.50
3 scoops = $7

the ice cream shop doesn't have a seating area and we thought it was a bit chilly to stand outside to eat our ice cream.  so we decided to go up Mott Street for some boba at TenRen.

now understand that good boba (or "bubble tea" for you non-Californians) is hard to find in NYC.  the only two places i've been happy with my boba is either St. Alps Teahouse in East Village or TenRen in various locations.

i tried the Hot Coconut Milk Tea.  it was pretty darn good.
